Catholic 'World Youth Day 2027' Confirmed To Take Place In Seoul South Korea

Pope Francis announced that the next World Youth Day will be held in Seoul in August 2027 during the closing Mass of World Youth Day 2023 in Lisbon, Portugal on the 6th.

World Youth Day is a festival of faith that brings together young Catholics from around the world.

During the week, Catholic youth from around the world interact, reflect on their faith, discuss social issues, and participate in cultural and artistic programs. It is an event that attracts worldwide attention with the participation of successive popes, including John Paul II and the current Pope Francis.

At a press conference held at the Lisbon World Youth Day Media Center on the same day, the Archdiocese of Seoul said, "I sincerely thank Pope Francis for choosing 'Seoul, Korea' as the next venue. I am very happy and honored," he said.

"As this is the second World Youth Day to be held in Asia after the Philippines, inheriting the universal spirit of World Youth Day, the Vatican City State as well as the Government of the Republic of Korea, the Seoul Metropolitan Government and others are committed to achieving unity through the rich and diverse cultures of Asia. We will prepare in close cooperation with local governments across the country," he said.

The Catholic World Youth Day, commonly referred to as WYD, is an international event where young people gather to share and strengthen their Catholic faith. Held annually under the auspices of the Pope, the event provides a platform for young people to come together, interact, and practice their faith.

WYD typically includes large gatherings, worship, talks, musical performances, and various activities. The main goal of the event is to inspire young Catholics from around the world to deepen their relationship with God, engage in discussions about faith and spirituality, and foster a sense of unity and camaraderie among participants. It's a unique opportunity for young people to connect with their peers, experience different cultures, and gain a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to their faith.

The Korean Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul predicts that 700,000 to 1 million people will attend the 2027 Seoul Convention, and it is predicted to be the event with the largest number of foreigners visiting Korea in the shortest amount of time.
